Announcing our Legal Secretary Internship Course!

Los Medanos Junior College's Legal Secretary Certification Program is the only academic training program in Northern California where students can earn their Legal Secretary Certificate. This program trains students to become effective legal secretaries through a curriculum that is focused on the practical application of both substantive legal training and hands on experience requiring high-level critical thinking. The focus of this program is to train the student to go beyond the obvious and become a proactive member of a legal team.

A critical course in the Legal Secretary Certificate curriculum is our Legal Secretary Internship course. Students who are in their last semester, have completed Legal Secretary I and II, Word, Excel and English (emphasis on grammar and proof-reading), with a B or better, and can type a minimum of 60 wpm are eligible to apply for an internship. These positions can be paid or unpaid and offer the student 3 units of academic credit towards their Legal Secretary Certificate. This course requires students to work as legal secretary interns for a minimum of 75 hours if unpaid and 150 hours if paid over our 18-week semester. At the beginning and at the end of the internship the Intern Moderator will meet with the sponsor to set a goal or goals for the intern and determine the sponsors' needs and expectations. At the conclusion of the internship the sponsor will be asked to complete a short evaluation of the student's work and the student will evaluate their experience.

This capstone course is often the student's favorite in the program and certainly the time when the most practical learning occurs. I have also found the internship sponsors genuinely enjoy working with the legal secretary students and find the experience a rewarding one.
